Programs for Stroke Survivors
Tandem Strength & Balance® can positively affect mobility and independence even several years following a stroke.
Agnes, 92, survived a moderate stroke that affected the left side of her body. Agnes needed a mechanical lift to be moved and needed total assistance to sit on the edge of her bed. Her son states, “After Mother’s stroke, she was not able to walk. She was confined to her bed and wheelchair, and not able to lift her hands from her lap, much less feed herself. The nursing home physical therapy classified her as someone that would not recover.”
The family hired Senior Abilities Unlimited to improve their mother’s quality of life. After 6 months with Tandem Strength and Balance training, Agnes no longer required the mechanical lift and was walking short distances with assistance and her walker. Even more importantly, Agnes was feeling better and she wanted to get out of bed and interact with others and participate in activities. Agnes continued with Tandem Strength & Balance and over one year following her stroke was walking 300 feet with her walker. She was walking rather than riding in her wheelchair. “Despite Mother’s initial stubborn resistance to physical therapy her recovery has been steady. Mother likes walking. She feeds herself, writes, and has good use of her hands. Her strength, both physical and mental, continues to grow.”
Agnes continues with Tandem Strength and Balance to maintain her mobility.
