Programs for Parkinson's Disease
Tandem Strength & Balance® cannot stop the disease but it can help improve mobility and general well-being.
Alice, 84, lived with Parkinson’s disease. Medicare covered physical therapy was reducing her fall rate but the services were discontinued. At that time she was walking with a rolling walker; yet fell at least twice a week requiring her husband to get her up off the floor. Two weeks later, the family noticed their mother getting weaker. They were concerned about her fall rate increasing again and, along with the physician, were contemplating placing Alice in a wheelchair. They regarded this as a last resort and sought out a company that specialized in ongoing exercise for Alice. They found Senior Abilities Unlimited (SAU).
SAU supported the family and suggested Alice not walk alone and recommended a wheelchair temporarily until her strength and balance improved with the SAU’s Tandem Strength and Balance program. Within three months Alice was walking safely and independently again. She only used her wheelchair occasionally. Her falling had reduced dramatically but when she did fall she could get herself off the floor.
“We were so fortunate to have Vicki as my mom’s physical therapist.” Her daughter Adrienne said. “She was very inspiring.”
Alice continued with Tandem Strength and Balance for over two years to maintain her function. This allowed Alice to remain walking and independent.
