Programs for Dementia & Alzheimer's Disease

Tandem Strength & Balance® makes mobility improvements for an individual with dementia because we can adapt to their pace.

Millie, 87, with dementia lived with her son and his family in their home. She walked around the house independently. Unfortunately, she fell and broke her pelvis and lost her ability to walk. The family put her in a nursing home for rehabilitation. Her daughter Margaret said, “We were hoping to have the nursing home's physical therapy staff work with her to regain her mobility to what it was before her fall. To our surprise after one week, the physical therapy staff at her nursing home felt that she had reached a plateau. They felt there was nothing they could do to get her out of a wheelchair.” Millie was placed in a secure dementia unit in a wheelchair with a lap buddy to prevent her from getting up because she would forget her walker.

Senior Abilities Unlimited met with the family and explained that people with dementia need more time to recuperate from injuries than the typical Medicare model allows. SAU went on to explain that it is necessary for those with dementia to have ongoing strength and balance training to eliminate the need for a walker, thereby negating any safety issues due to memory impairment. Margaret continued, “They gave us encouragement and let us know my mother could be walking again, - probably without her walker.” Millie began Tandem Strength and Balance® program and within four months she was walking independently and moved into an Assisted Living facility. Millie continued with Tandem Strength and Balance® to maintain her independence.
