Programs for Aging

Tandem Strength & Balance® compensates for age-related changes which would otherwise lead to decreased mobility.

Greta was an 82 year old woman living independently in her home. She had numerous medical problems including arthritis, spinal stenosis, osteopenia and severe scoliosis. Greta had to climb a flight of stairs to get into her home. Since her hip replacement one year previously, the stair-climbing had become more difficult and was becoming a potential barrier for her remaining at home. When Greta went out she used a cane or held onto a family member’s arm for support. She was attending college courses and was becoming concerned about her inability to walk long distances because her legs “got tired”, and was concerned about falling.

She began using Tandem Strength and Balance with the ultimate goal of remaining in her own home. Greta lived with pain, due to her medical conditions, but with strength training her pain was reduced enough to no longer be a limiting factor for her independence. Further more, with balance training her confidence increased to a level reducing her fear of falling. Her daughter, Maureen stated “Carolyn [her PT] showed genuine concern and compassion for my mom’s overall health and well-being.”

Four years later, Greta continues to live in her home, continues to drive, goes out for social activities daily and continues to feel the benefits of regular exercise; maintenance of strength, no falls and improved confidence in her abilities to stay independent.
